Tea Leaf Reading

Tasseography – Insights into Tea Leaf Reading

The ancient art of interpreting patterns made by tea leaves in a cup is called Tasseography. The term also encompasses reading and decoding the meaning of leftover coffee grounds and wine sediments.

While tea leaf reading is associated with gypsy soothsayers and Victorian parlor games, the practice can be tracked to ancient Greece, Asia and the Middle East. Evidence of tea readings have also been tied to Scottish and Irish history, as well as Eastern European tradition.

Leaf Reading Rituals

To prepare for a tea leaf reading, psychics often use a special wide-brimmed china cup, saucer and spoon. The items are first washed by immersing them in hot soap and water —and then rinsed in cold water.

Part of the ritual of reading tea leaves is in the act of sitting down and sipping the tea in the company of fellow drinkers.

Fresh, natural tea leaves – often Jasmine or Earl Grey varieties – are often used for tasseography. The person having the reading is asked to spoon a specified amount of tea into a heated teapot or into the china cup.

Sometimes the dried tea leaves are stirred before spooning them into the pot or teacup, which is similar to shuffling tarot cards before a reading.

Boiling water is poured over the tea as the person receiving the reading stirs the pot or cup. At the same time, he or she is asked to concentrate on the particular question about which an answer is sought. The teapot is swirled and the tea poured into the cup.

When the tea is cool enough to drink, the person receiving the reading sips the brew until about a quarter of an inch of tea is left at the bottom of the cup.

The cup is then swirled three times in a clockwise direction by the fortune teller so that the tea leaves are in a state of suspension. It is then quickly flipped face-down onto a napkin, which has been placed on the saucer. The tea leaves remain in the cup -- along the bottom and sides.

Interpretation

To interpret the tea leaves, the psychic begins by looking at the position of the leaves for timing indicators, as well as for symbol shapes that serve as messages.

The cup is read in a clockwise manner, with the handle representing the day of the reading. The rest of the cup is divided into twelve months, with the six month position being directly facing the handle.

Symbols from the tea leaves close to the rim of the cup represent the present or things that may happen within a few days or weeks. Those on the sides predict the future. Leaves forming symbols at the bottom of the cup predict things that may occur in the distant future.

Each fortune-teller has a unique way of interpreting the symbols formed by the leaves. Some view the tea leaves near the brim of the cup as having more importance than those near the bottom.

Interpretation of the symbols can be either exact (i.e. a shape of a house may mean a home) or symbolic ( i.e. a shape of a house may mean contentment).

Contradicting images imply indecision in the person's mind. Sometimes the top of the cup is seen as lucky and the bottom is seen as unlucky. The size of the symbol may indicate importance to some physics.
